Quick answer: Start with what you want the time to do for you, then choose the practice (Ayurveda, yoga, movement or rest), the part of Kerala, the format (residential or day), the length, and finally the host. Before paying, check exactly what the price includes, who leads the program, whether you need medical advice first, and what happens if you cancel.
Kerala has hundreds of places that call themselves wellness retreats. Some are full Ayurveda centres with resident physicians. Some are beach resorts with a spa menu. Some are a yoga teacher with a shala and a weekly timetable. All of them can look the same on a booking page.
This guide is the checklist we use at Lifed when we decide whether a program is ready to go live, rewritten for the person booking. Work through it in order and you will end up with a shortlist of two or three programs that genuinely fit, rather than a tab full of photos.

The 9-step checklist at a glance
| Step | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | What do I want this time to do for me? | Every other choice follows from it |
| 2 | Which practice fits that? | Ayurveda, yoga, movement and rest programs feel very different |
| 3 | Where in Kerala? | Coast, city, hills and backwaters suit different trips |
| 4 | Residential or day program? | Decides cost, logistics and how deep you go |
| 5 | How long? | A 3-hour session and a 14-day stay are different products |
| 6 | What does the price include? | Stay, meals, therapies and transfers vary widely |
| 7 | Who leads it? | The host is the program |
| 8 | Do I need medical advice first? | Some programs are physically demanding |
| 9 | Reviews, dates and cancellation | Protects you if plans change |
Step 1: Start with what you want the time to do
Most people search by practice: "Ayurveda retreat", "yoga retreat Kerala". It is more useful to start one step earlier and name what is happening in your life.
- Running on empty? You may want rest, quiet and a steady daily rhythm more than an intense schedule.
- Spending your working life on screens? Look for programs with device-free time, outdoor time and bodywork built into the day.
- Wanting to move well again? A structured movement program, such as Kalaripayattu or a yoga series, may suit you better than a spa-led stay.
- Travelling to Kerala anyway? A day program or a short series can give you real practice in place without rebuilding your itinerary.
- Wanting time with people who matter? Small group or private group programs work for couples, friends, families and teams.
Write one sentence: "I want this time to help me ___." Keep it. You will use it at every step that follows.
Step 2: Choose the practice that fits
| Practice | What it usually involves | Often suits | Typical formats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ayurveda (general) | Consultation, daily bodywork such as Abhyanga, Ayurvedic meals, yoga | People wanting rest and routine in a traditional setting | 2 to 7 day residential stays, single sessions |
| Panchakarma | A longer, physician-led Ayurvedic program with preparation and a set sequence of procedures | People with time, who are ready for a structured, physician-assessed stay | Usually 14 days or longer, residential |
| Yoga | Asana, breathwork (pranayama), meditation | Beginners to experienced practitioners wanting regular practice | Day series, 5 to 7 day residential |
| Kalaripayattu and movement | Kerala's traditional movement art, mobility work, Kalari bodywork | People wanting to move with more confidence and learn a cultural practice | 1 to 5 day day-programs, 7 day residential |
| Rest and recovery | Sound sessions, meditation, deep relaxation, device-free time | Busy professionals who struggle to switch off | 1 session to 5-week series |
If you are torn between Ayurveda and yoga, ask how you want your days to feel. Ayurveda programs are usually built around receiving: therapies, meals and rest. Yoga programs are built around doing: practice you lead with your own body. Many Kerala programs combine both.
Step 3: Choose where in Kerala
Kerala is a narrow state, but the setting changes a lot between the coast and the Western Ghats.
| Destination | Setting | Good for | Getting there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kochi and Fort Kochi | Heritage port town, sea air, cafés, easy logistics | First visits, shorter trips, day programs, Ayurvedic stays | Cochin International Airport (COK) |
| Wayanad | Forested hills, plantations, rivers | Deeper quiet, nature, longer resets | Nearest airport is Calicut (CCJ); allow a long road transfer |
| Thrissur | Cultural heartland, Kalari tradition | Kalaripayattu and movement | COK by road |
| Kollam | Backwaters and quieter coast | Ayurvedic stays away from crowds | Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) by road |
| Munnar | Tea hills, cooler air | Combining practice with hill travel | COK by road |
| Varkala | Cliffside beach town with a yoga scene | Beach-led yoga trips | TRV by road |
Lifed currently hosts programs in Kochi and Fort Kochi, Ernakulam district, Wayanad, Thrissur, Kollam and Munnar. We do not list Varkala programs yet.
Step 4: Residential stay or day program?
Residential programs include your room and meals. You arrive, settle in and the whole day is designed around the program. They suit people who want to step fully out of normal life.
Day programs have no stay. You attend sessions, a single day or a series over several days or weeks. They suit Kerala residents, people already travelling in Kerala, and anyone who wants practice without the cost of a stay.
A simple test: if you would spend most of your free hours on your phone in a hotel room, choose residential. If you have a place to stay and a life to run, choose a day series.
Step 5: Decide how long
| Length | What you can realistically expect | Example formats in Kerala |
|---|---|---|
| A few hours | One deep experience, such as traditional bodywork | Single Kalari Uzhichil or Ayurvedic relaxation session |
| 2 to 3 days | A short break with a clear focus | Weekend Ayurvedic reset, 3-day movement program |
| 5 to 7 days | Enough time to settle into a daily rhythm | Most Ayurvedic and yoga stays |
| 14 days or more | Long, structured traditional programs | Panchakarma |
| Weekly over 4 to 5 weeks | Practice that fits around work | Yoga and sound series |
Booking data from the retreat industry suggests short formats are popular: around a quarter of retreat bookings on one large platform were 3-day, 2-night weekends, and demand drops after 7 nights (Retreat Guru data via Retreat Center Collaboration). Longer is not automatically better. Choose the length that matches your one-sentence goal and the time you can really give.
Step 6: Check exactly what the price includes
Two programs can show similar prices and include very different things. Before you compare, check each of these:
- Is the price for the whole program or per session? Per person or per room?
- Is accommodation included? Which room type? Is a private room extra?
- Which meals are included: all meals, or breakfast and dinner only?
- Which therapies, sessions and consultations are included, and how many?
- Is airport pickup included, or do you arrange your own transfer?
- Are taxes included in the price shown?
- Are there extras on site, such as herbal preparations or excursions?
On Lifed, each program page lists inclusions before payment and the price shown is the price paid, with no booking fee. Prices across our Kerala programs currently range from about ₹5,000 for a short day program to several lakh rupees for a 14-day Panchakarma stay.
Step 7: Look closely at who leads it
The host is the program. A beautiful property with an inexperienced lead will not give you the experience the photos promise.
Questions to ask any retreat:
- Who leads the program day to day, and what is their training and experience?
- For Ayurvedic programs, is there a qualified Ayurvedic physician who consults with you? How often?
- For Kalaripayattu, who is the Gurukkal (master) or trainer, and what lineage do they come from?
- What is the maximum group size?
- Which languages are sessions run in?
In Kerala, Ayurveda centres can apply for state tourism classification (currently Ayur Diamond, Ayur Gold and Ayur Silver), which is one signal you can ask about (Kerala Tourism). On Lifed, every host is a vetted Healthmate, and each program page names the lead practitioners and their background.
Step 8: Ask the health and safety questions
Wellness retreats are not medical treatment, and a good host will say so clearly. Still, some programs are physically intense, involve specific diets, or include procedures that are not suitable for everyone.
- If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or take regular medication, talk to your own doctor before booking.
- For Ayurvedic and Panchakarma programs, ask whether the host's physician reviews your suitability before you arrive.
- Tell the host about allergies and dietary needs in advance.
- Consider travel and medical insurance for residential trips.
The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health advises people not to use Ayurvedic approaches to postpone seeing a conventional health care provider about a medical problem (NCCIH). A program can sit alongside your regular care. It should never replace it.
Step 9: Check reviews, dates and cancellation terms
- Reviews: look for reviews from people who actually attended, ideally describing the daily experience rather than just the view.
- Dates: fixed-date cohorts start on set days; flexible-date programs let you start on a day that suits you.
- Cancellation: read the refund schedule before paying, not after.
For example, many residential programs on Lifed currently follow this schedule: a full refund 30 or more days before the start, 50% at 15 to 29 days, 25% at 7 to 14 days, and nothing within 7 days. There is also a 24-hour grace period with a full refund when the start date is more than 14 days away, and a full refund if the host or Lifed cancels.

How Lifed approaches this
Lifed is a platform to book and host curated, real-world wellbeing programs. Every program is co-created with the Healthmate who hosts it, built around what it is for, and reviewed before it goes live. That means each page tells you who the program is for, what is included, who leads it and what it costs, before you pay. If you are not sure where to start, you can message the host from any program page.
Frequently asked questions
What should I look for in a wellness retreat in Kerala?
Look for a clear purpose, a named and experienced lead practitioner, a realistic daily schedule, a full list of inclusions, honest non-medical language, and written cancellation terms. Be cautious of any retreat that promises to cure or treat a condition.
How long should a wellness retreat in Kerala be?
It depends on what you want. A single traditional session takes a few hours. Five to seven days is enough for most people to settle into a daily rhythm. Traditional Panchakarma programs usually run 14 days or longer.
How much does a wellness retreat in Kerala cost?
On Lifed, Kerala day programs currently start from about ₹5,000 to ₹6,500, 5 to 7 day residential stays range from about ₹48,000 to ₹1,80,000, and 14-day Panchakarma stays start from about ₹1,26,000. Price depends on duration, accommodation, meals, therapies and the host.
Should I choose an Ayurveda retreat or a yoga retreat?
Choose Ayurveda if you want a program built around rest, bodywork and Ayurvedic meals. Choose yoga if you want to build your own daily practice. Many Kerala programs combine both.
Which part of Kerala is best for a wellness retreat?
Kochi and Fort Kochi are easiest to reach and suit shorter trips. Wayanad suits people who want forest, quiet and distance from city life. Thrissur is known for Kalaripayattu, and Kollam offers quieter backwater settings.
Can international travellers book Kerala wellness programs on Lifed?
Yes, programs can be booked online through lifedhealth.com. Check visa requirements on the official Indian government e-Visa site before you travel.
Is a wellness retreat a medical treatment?
No. Programs on Lifed are non-clinical wellbeing experiences. They do not diagnose, treat or cure any condition and are not a substitute for medical care.
